have you ever had something click in your brain in a second and think "oh, this is my entire life now"? that's what sk8 did to me. it happened in an instant — the exact second reki did, when langa landed his first flip at s. something just unlocked.
i fell in love with this show at the same pace reki fell in love with langa on a skateboard. and then reki swears it snowed on okinawa, and i was done. completely cooked. no going back.
i also want everyone to know that this show's dub holds a special place in my heart. i watched yuri on ice and thought we'd gotten away with all we could already — and then adam opens his mouth and says "hey bitches and bros and nonbinary hoes" and it was a genuine flashbang to my brain. hearing enbys called out in an anime dub like that?? historic. i will give adam that one thing and only that one thing.
this show is my comfort watch. these are my babies. a friend painted langa's board for me as a gift and a physical shrine was born in my room. bones please give me season two. i am going to lose it.
reki is the heart of sk8 and i will not hear otherwise. he is the one who built the love of skating into langa from nothing, who shared his whole world without hesitation. his passion is infectious and his kindness is genuine and his arc about worth and belonging hit somewhere very personal.
also he is just so funny and chaotic and good. one of the best written shonen leads in recent memory. the red to langa's blue. the fire to the snow.
langa hasegawa is tattooed on my arm. that's how much he means to me. the quiet one who found something to live for again through skating, through reki — watching him come alive across the season is one of the most satisfying character journeys i've seen.
